Plastic battens have also made the scene in the last decade but are used far less often than the other types of battens. Traditional wood battens are a standard size of 1 x2 x4 and are constructed of a hardwood. Board and batten siding sometimes called barn siding consists of vertical planks at least 1 inch thick for durability nailed side by side. High grade wood with 100 recycled pads to elevate above the roof deck to eliminate water ponding rotting of the battens and allow free flow of water and air.

But a purlin is applied directly onto the roof rafters running perpendicular between them while a batten is nailed to roof sheathing or applied over an existing roof for installation of a new roof. Roof battens may be oriented at right angles to the trusses or rafters or installed parallel to the slope of the roof. Roofing materials are attached on top of a 2 x2 wood batten grid creating a 1 continuous airspace. Battens is the common professional term for an above sheathing ventilation asv roofing system and is also referred to as strapping or strips.

Metal battens are used with metal roof panels. Length provides spacing on the roof for water drainage.
