Wood roofs are meant to breathe and should be laid over a substrate that allows air to circulate behind them.

They are not particularly long lived and they are a poor choice in areas that get lots of moisture or where wildfires are a danger. To maximize lifespan you do need to baby them and practice proper maintenance.
